Vinyl with a foam backing that stiffens the panel and helps it lie straighter on the wall.
Cement-based board, like James Hardie, with the look of painted wood. It won't rot and it holds paint well.
Treated wood-strand siding, like LP SmartSide. Real wood texture, and lighter than fiber cement.
Natural wood clapboard or shingles. The traditional New England look, with paint or stain to keep up.
The edges are where water gets in. They're replaced and flashed with the siding, not left as they were.
With the old siding off, we check the sheathing underneath. Anything rotted is cut out and replaced, the wall is wrapped and flashed at the windows and doors, and then the new siding goes on. You see it all on the quote before we start.
